DECEPTION IN THE MORNING
âI canât help but feel that perhaps we should attend to our latest lead, my dear.â
âI feel that you should drink your tea and eat your biscuits,â YeoWoo retorted. She caught the scent of Jake lingering in the hallway and called out to him, âStay away from the Turtle Villa until the wedding!â
He stuck his head around the door a moment later and said, âItâs really creepy the way you can do that.â
âItâs creepier to hang around in the hallway listening to people talk,â she retorted, and he grinned.
âI was just trying to decide whether or not to have breakfast,â he said. âWhy are you getting bossy all of a sudden, nuna?â
âBecause boys your age have been turning up dead around Seoul over the last month,â she said matter-of-factly.
Jake laughed and snatched an apple from the table. âGood thing Iâm not a boy, then, nuna,â he said, winking at her as he headed for the door again. âAnd that Iâm not Korean, so I donât feel like I have to do as Iâm told just because youâre older than me. Donât forget that I can be as helpful as the old bloke if you need something done.â
Athelas raised a brow at Jakeâs departing back, and asked YeoWoo, âIs he likely to go to the villa or stay out late in unsavoury locales out of sheer contrariness, do you think?â
A pinch of irritation clawed at YeoWoo again. âNo,â she said shortly. Jake wasnât a contrarian by natureâhe would have been likely to do something rash if she asked him to do it, but he was too good-natured, or perhaps too lazy, to put himself out for spite or contrariness. There was no reason for Jake to try to do things for her, and his assurance that he would, irritated her.
Athelas had that galling suggestion of a smile that informed her exactly how well he had guessed both her thoughts and Jakeâs likely attitude.
âHow delightful of him,â he said. âNow, as much as I enjoy Camelliaâs very excellent breakfast, I do think we might discuss the possibility of paying a call on the elder Peregrine.â
âSit still for a few minutes and finish your tea,â she told him. âIâm not going to go running around all of Seoul looking for one gumiho elder, so you might as well settle down.â
Despite this recommendation, she herself had been unable to settle comfortably at the breakfast table this morning herself. She might not have been quite so sharp and willing to snarl if she hadnât felt that she had, in some vague way, disgraced herself the previous day. And if not disgraced, at least shown her underbelly to someone she had much rather not have shown it to. It was never a good idea to display your soft underbellyâbut doing so to someone as dangerous as the Steward was even worse.
So YeoWoo was uncomfortably, grittily uneasy, and that uneasiness made her angry. She didnât want to go hanging around Peregrineâs house like a
